Saw a really cool News Special today of a US Air A320 in the Hudson River. This pilot must have blessed to be able to decide what to do and then have the ability to pull it off and no one gets killed.
I wonder what the passengers were thinking as this event was playing out. A quick act of contrition, an Ah Shit!, a tear and a Why Me?
What do think you would have thought during those maybe 2 minutes from everything is cool to everything is coming apart?

I once read that passengers on a failing airship lapse into an emotional state of shock, numbing themselves from the horror of their reality. The passengers on US Air would probably tell a different tale. My speculation is that, up until the moment of impact, most would be frantically clinging to the hope that the pilot will find a way to pull them out of it. Just as in foxholes, I'd guess there are no atheists in falling airplanes. Certainly you have to be thinking of your family and loved ones, in images if not in sentences. Is it true that our whole lives flash before our eyes as we die? When I was still a smoker I would abstain from cigarettes during flights, but would keep one handy in my shirt pocket, figuring that if the flight went down, at least I could have one last drag before I died.
ReplyDeleteI probably had over a million miles in airplanes, about 750,000 on Delta and the others on cheap ass discount airlines to save YKK money. I always said a short prayer at take-off and landing.
ReplyDeleteI never thought about the "One last Drag". Had it crossed my mind I would have had a Marlboro Light and a lighter at the ready.
